Pastor Eric Johnson of Bethel Church, in his sermon Running with an Inheritance said, “How do we grow value for something that cost us nothing?”
We have a great inheritance Christ followers! Our inheritance is eternal life. A life free from pain and suffering. A life free from loss and grief. A life of joy and fullness, abundance greater than our imaginations.
As God’s chosen people, wholly and completely loved, we have done nothing to receive or earn this inheritance, just allowed Christ to be Lord of our lives. Christ offers us blessing after blessing. The blessings come in the form of joy, peace, hope, wisdom, and direct access to our Heavenly Father in prayer. Blessings can also come in the form of possessions, that we are entrusted to steward.
BUT…Do we lack valuing salvation and our inheritance as Sons and Daughters of the Most High God because it cost us nothing? Are we mature enough in our faith to steward the inheritance that we have been given? Or will we let its value escape us?
Psalm 28:8-9 (AMP), a prayer of David, challenges us to consider our inheritance (salvation and all of our blessings and possessions) from a fresh perspective.
“The Lord is their [unyielding] strength, And He is the fortress of salvation to His anointed. Save Your people and bless Your inheritance; Be their shepherd also, and carry them forever.”
I believe the first step to understand the value of the inheritance, is to understand who’s inheritance it truly is. The inheritance is His for us as his children to steward.
All too often we become comfortable with the inheritance and take it for granted, missing out on the blessing available. We become a little too “entitled” to heaven and His incredible blessings for our own good. Or we begin to try and earn it. Sometimes, I dare say, that salvation doesn’t feel like enough any more for some of us and we begin to strive for more, on our own accord.
“Bless YOUR inheritance” David proclaimed. He knew well, that everything he had was God’s. Our inheritance, is His. Everything we have, He has given us. He gave His inheritance for us to steward it, use it it for His plans and purposes and to make His name known above all other names. Let’s start there.
What we have Lord, it’s Yours. You have called us your “treasured possessions.” Bless us, your possession. Bless the inheritance that you have given to us without any strings attached and without fine print that requires us to pay you back for what we use. You are a good Father, you give to us, your people, generously, from the abundance of your heart. Amen.
